Since 1946, Café Giảng has quietly become part of Hanoi’s cultural identity. More than one of the city’s oldest coffee houses, it is the birthplace of Vietnamese Egg Coffee—a creation that has come to represent the artistry, resilience and warmth of Hanoi coffee.
Its story began with Nguyễn Văn Giảng, whose quiet ingenuity transformed necessity into inspiration. During a time when fresh milk was scarce, he created a delicate egg cream to accompany traditional Vietnamese coffee. What started as a thoughtful innovation gradually evolved into a flavour that generations would come to cherish—not because it sought attention, but because it earned affection.
Yet Café Giảng has never been defined by a single recipe.
It is defined by the devotion to preserve it.
For generations, our family has safeguarded every detail with patience and care—from selecting the finest coffee beans to perfecting the silky egg cream, from balancing every cup by hand to serving it in warm water, just as it has always been. These quiet rituals may appear simple, yet together they preserve a character that time has never diminished.

Every new creation—whether Egg Cocoa, Egg Matcha or other signature beverages—is guided by the same philosophy: to honour our heritage while allowing it to evolve with grace.
We have never considered ourselves merely a coffee house.
Every guest who steps through our doors enters a place where flavour meets memory, and where every cup carries with it a fragment of Hanoi’s soul. Some arrive searching for an authentic taste of the city. Others return in search of a memory they thought they had left behind.
Perhaps this is how a legacy truly grows—not through grand campaigns or fleeting attention, but through genuine experiences, shared conversations, and recommendations passed naturally from one generation to another.
In 2018, Café Giảng opened its first international home in Yokohama, Japan, carrying Vietnamese Egg Coffee beyond Hanoi while remaining faithful to its origins. Every cup continues to be served with the same quiet rituals, because we believe authenticity should never change with geography.
Today, Vietnamese Egg Coffee is recognised around the world as one of Hanoi’s defining culinary experiences.
Yet for Café Giảng, our greatest achievement has never been being the first.
It is that, after nearly a century, every cup still reflects the same spirit, craftsmanship and sincerity that inspired its beginning.
